Ideally I’d love to get my remaining hand on the following, eloquently written up for us by guest blogger David Forbes (aka Coilhouse commenter ampersandpilcrow).

A relief of Götz von Berlichingen in Germany, containing the famous phrase. My grandparents escaped Russia during the revolution and came to America.

It was 1504 and, at the tender young age of 24, the plundering knight, mercenary and all around bastard had the upper part of his right arm torn off in a cannon blast. The second device extended to the end of the knight’s forearm, and was held in place with a leather strap.

Furthermore, spring-loaded mechanisms were placed within the hand, which allowed the fingers to be locked into place. I had a lot of fun writing and researching it. I haven’t really traced back my family tree Robyn but my father says the same thing about my grand parents my great great grand mother escaped from Russia and my Grandfather From Germany he did have seven childern so you can only imagine how many Gotz’s there are they may have changed the spelling of yours because it was Russian but I think because mine was more German they just too off the accent marks lol. The similarities are crazy though, 16th century infamous North-East European mercenary that loses his arm and gets a crazy prosthetic that makes him even better than before. Despite his wishes to stop wanton violence, Gotz found himself powerless to control the rebels and after a month of leadership he deserted his command and returned to the Schloss Jagsthausen to sit out the rest of the rebellion. He died on July 23, 1562 in Hornberg Castle.

Goethe even wrote a play about him and that went on to inspire Guts […], […] http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/62054/Gotz-von-Berlichingen http://coilhouse.net/2008/03/the-iron-hand-of-gotz-von-berlichingen/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Götz_von_Berlichingen_(Goethe) […].

Robyn: Wow. *CLANG*. This allowed von Berlichingen not only to use his right arm prosthetic with unparalleled control in battle, but also hold the reins of the horse, play cards, write with a quil  or drink from a mug of ale. Götz’s larger-than-life persona and deeds lived on, however, as did the now-famous hand, preserved today in the museum at his old Jagsthausen castle.

So let me get this straight: there’s a historical precedent for Ash’s prosthetic hand in Army of Darkness? Plain and simple, from us to you. He did survive gangrene and he did get a prosthetic, but far more out of the ordinary: a new iron hand with a great grip that allowed von Berlichingen to hack and slash at will for many years after. The fingers and palm could only be acted in two ways by the hinges: either the mechanism curled inward into a sword-holding grip, or it was loosened for a stale handshake. For one, there’s the Swabian Salute.

@Skerror…I dunno if the church would have an issue with it given their love of mechanical death machines. All this in an era where steam power was still a distant dream and Copernicus had barely begun to deduce that Earth wasn’t the center of the universe. That reminds me… I need to netflix some of those old Wild Wild West episodes. Debunking the soy-estrogen problem and other soy myths. I agree with what violaine said in the first comment, What i want to know is who the hell made this arm? I wonder if the church in 1504 would have had a problem with this arm…playing god and whatnot. Version 2.0 was splendid, equipped with joints at each knuckles and spring-loaded mechanisms to lock fingers into place, in a manner similar to the ratchet-and-pawl system used in handcuffs.

Götz von Berlichingen was a famous German mercenary knight employed by the lords and kings of the time to do their bidding. Written on March 25, 2017 by Adela at 3:00 PM | 1 Adela, Germany, Northern Europe. For this action, he was again placed under the ban in 1518. There is one hilarious line in the play which by all accounts seem to be based on a historical account. *CLANG* Götz von Berlichingen was definitely a larger-than-life figure, and his legacy lives on. On October 17, 1526, he was acquitted by the Imperial chamber.
